Time Warner è nata nel 1990 dalla fusione tra Time Inc. (primo gruppo editoriale USA), e Warner Communications, dopo che la prima aveva acquisito la seconda.
Nell'ottobre del 1996 la nuova compagnia acquistò, da Ted Turner, la Turner Broadcasting System (una cui divisione è la CNN).
Nel 2000 dopo che America On Line (AOL) ha acquisito Time Warner, l'azienda cambia il nome in AOL Time Warner
Dopo la fusione con AOL, tuttavia, i profitti della divisione internet della società (AOL) diminuirono, come caddero anche i valori di mercato di altre aziende internet. Come risultato, il valore di AOL calò drasticamente. AOL Time Warner riportò una perdita di 99 miliardi di dollari nel 2002 - in quel tempo la più grande perdita mai registrata da una società.
Per tutta risposta, nel novembre 2002 l'azienda riprende il nome, antecedente la fusione con AOL, Time Warner. L'azienda rimuove Steve Case dalla carica di presidente del consiglio di amministrazione. Case si dimise dal consiglio della Time Warner il 31 ottobre 2005.
